Overview
On June 5, 2025, the Department of Civil Engineering at Covenant University, in partnership with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Nigeria Section, hosted a highly impactful Town and Gown Collaboration event themed "Bridging Academia and Industry." The initiative aimed to connect civil engineering students with industry leaders and professional networks, fostering a deeper understanding of practical career pathways and professional development opportunities.




Event Objectives
The Town and Gown Collaboration was designed with specific goals in mind. These included introducing the concept of Town and Gown partnerships to the students and faculty, showcasing the value and benefits of ASCE to both students and professionals, and providing a platform to share valuable resources available on ASCE platforms. The event also offered actionable steps for initiating an ASCE Student Chapter and encouraged professional development, networking, and early engagement with industry leaders.
Participants
The event drew participation from both academic and industry stakeholders. From Covenant University, notable attendees included Engr. Prof. Olatokunbo Ofuyatan, the Head of the Civil Engineering Department, the former Dean and the current Dean of the College of Engineering, as well as over 200 enthusiastic civil engineering students. Representing the ASCE Nigeria Section were Engr. Austin Odibi, the President of the ASCE Nigeria Section; Engr. Kingsley Erifeta, Chairman of the Students Activities & Outreach Committee; and Ahmed Ayinla, the Publicity Chair.




Event Highlights
The event commenced with an opening prayer led by a student representative, setting a reflective tone for the session. Engr. Prof. Ofuyatan delivered the welcome address and introduced the invited guests. This was followed by a keynote presentation by Engr. Austin Odibi, President of the ASCE Nigeria Section, titled "Empowering Future Civil Engineers through ASCE Student Chapters." In his presentation, he emphasized the importance of Town and Gown partnerships in civil engineering, discussed the global and local benefits of ASCE membership, introduced key ASCE resources and career development tools, and laid out clear steps for students to actively engage with ASCE.
Following the presentation, students were given the opportunity to ask questions, which were addressed comprehensively by Engr. Odibi. The session fostered robust interaction and interest among the students.
Engr. Kingsley Erifeta, Chairman of the Students Activities & Outreach Committee, then delivered a focused presentation on "Steps to Start an ASCE Student Chapter." He provided detailed guidance on the application process, chapter operations, and benefits. He also reiterated the value of ASCE’s free student membership and encouraged students to take full advantage of it.
The event concluded with a closing remark by Prof. Ofuyatan, a vote of thanks by the President of the Civil Engineering Students Association, a closing prayer, and group photographs to capture the moment.








Key Outcomes
The collaboration yielded several significant outcomes. It raised awareness among students about ASCE’s role in their academic and professional development. The Civil Engineering Department expressed renewed commitment to supporting the formation of an ASCE Student Chapter at Covenant University. Furthermore, the event strengthened the relationship between ASCE Nigeria Section and Covenant University, while inspiring students to pursue greater professional growth and global engagement.
Conclusion
The Town and Gown Collaboration at Covenant University was a landmark event that successfully bridged the gap between academic instruction and industry practice. Through compelling presentations, interactive discussions, and strategic insights, students were introduced to the global ASCE network and motivated to engage proactively in shaping their careers.
